CU Supporter In Congress to Exit in Order to Deal With Medical Issue

WASHINGTON—A credit union supporter in Congress, Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) has announced she will not seek re-election in 2024.

Wexton—who has served in Congress since 2019—announced she was recently diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare neurological disorder.

“Rep. Wexton has been a friend to credit unions since she took office, and her support has made a difference on several vital credit union issues,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “We wish her and her family the best as she steps away to focus on her health.”

Added Virginia Credit Union League President/CEO Carrie Hunt, “We appreciate the Congresswoman’s many years of public service to the Commonwealth and look forward to working with her as she serves out the remainder of her term. She’s remained a friend to credit unions throughout her time as a legislator at both the state and federal levels. Her contributions will have lasting impact into the future.”

The trade groups noted Wexton was one of 31 Democrats to oppose expanded Internal Revenue Service reporting requirements in October 2021, leading to the provision being dropped from the final Build Back Better Act. She also co-sponsored the credit union-supported Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, which would provide a safe harbor for financial institutions serving legal cannabis businesses.
