ANN ARBOR, Mich.–Member Business Connection said it will once again be hosting CU Lunch Local in conjunction with International Credit Union Week. This is ninth year it has done so, and said this year it is looking to “step up the challenge” around the initiative, set for Oct. 13.
CU Lunch Local shows support in local communities by dedicating dollars spent that day to local restaurants. Credit unions designate a specific location or have food catered in, invite their members to do the same and celebrate their events by posting images online with the hashtag #culunchlocal via social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
MBC said it is again asking for industry wide support for local businesses by asking credit unions, CUSOs, leagues, regulators, and credit union partners to shop and spend dollars locally.
“This year we’re looking to step up the challenge and show support not just on October 13th, but every day leading up to the official CU Lunch Local event,” the organization said. “What does that mean? It’s simple. If a participating organization supports a local business between NOW and October 13th, we’re asking participants to share photos and stories on social media with the hashtag #CULunchLocal.”
‘This Year is Special’
MBC said the devastation COVID-19 has caused to many local businesses and restaurants is something that could take communities years to recover from, and that every dollar spent makes a difference when it goes to a local business.
“This year is special in that our local businesses need our support more than ever,” said Bill Beardsley, president/CEO of Michigan Business Connection. “Every cup of coffee, smoothie, and meal that we buy local, gives our favorite local businesses a better chance of navigating these difficult times. Credit Unions have a history of giving back and supporting their local communities. Let’s continue to stand together and help lift our local economy.”

“Although officially taking place on October 13, 2020, CU Lunch Local is asking you to share your ongoing stories and support of local business by sharing your pictures by posting them directly to the CU Lunch Local Facebook page with the hashtag #culunclocal every day you buy local beginning today,” the organization added.
