CU Exec Is Named To Lead State Regulator

Katie Averill

DES MOINES, Iowa.–A credit union executive has been named superintendent of the Iowa Division of Credit Unions by Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Katie Averill, SVP at Citizens Community CU in Fort Dodge, Iowa, has been named to fill the post that is being vacated by the retirement of JoAnn Johnson, who was also previously the chairman of NCUA.  The appointment still requires confirmation by the state Senate when it convenes in January 2018.

A 10-year veteran of Citizens Community CU, Averill told local media she applied for the position but only found out she had been appointed “a short while” before Reynolds made the announcement.

The Iowa Division of Credit Unions is responsible for overseeing the 93 state chartered credit unions.

Averill is a certified credit union executive with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Iowa State University in Ames. At Citizens Community Credit Union, she has overseen seven branch locations. She served as director of marketing and later as vice president of marketing and business development before becoming senior vice president.

In 2015, Averill was appointed to the Iowa Early Childhood State Board.
