ROCHESTER, N.Y.–Two financial institutions, including a credit union here, have been hit by skimmers that drained funds from consumers’ accounts.
First Alliance Credit Union was hit in late October; employees discovered the skimmer themselves in the morning. According to ABC 6 News, the credit union contacted police to report members had found their accounts compromised. To date, police said, members have lost about $17,000.
Around the same time Premier Bank—which had been alerted to the risk and was checking its ATMs three times per day—discovered a skimmer around 6 a.m. ABC 6 News reported that no bank customers have reported lost funds.
In both cases, surveillance video shows what is believed to be the same person placing the skimmers on the ATMs.
