WASHINGTON—Credit unions met this week with Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson to discuss a range of policy priorities, America’s Credit Unions reported.
The delegation, which included ACU President/CEO Jim Nussle, and representatives from state leagues and credit unions, discussed the Fed’s debit card interchange cap proposal, liquidity, the fraud epidemic, and more, according to the trade group.
“We thank Vice Chair Jefferson for his time and attention listening to credit union policy priorities,” Nussle said. “In addition to going over detailed concerns with the Fed’s debit card interchange proposal, we highlighted the many ways credit unions work to increase financial well-being for all Americans, and the latest examples of why credit unions are an essential part of the financial services marketplace.”
The Delegation
Nussle and Jefferson were joined by America’s Credit Unions’ Madison Rose, as well as:
- John Bratsakis, president/CEO of the MD|DC Credit Union Association
- Nicola Foggie, chief regulatory officer of the CrossState Credit Union Association
- Grace Newcombe, senior director of federal advocacy and communications for the League of Southeastern Credit Unions

AACUL Hires First Director of Advocacy
Separately, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) said it has hired Austin DeBey for its newly developed director of advocacy position.
DeBey is currently the VP-advocacy operations and legislative affairs at the GoWest Credit Union Association, and “has a proven 19-year track record of providing strategic leadership, coordinating projects, and leveraging the collective strength of credit unions working for single-state and multi-state leagues,” the AACUL said.
“Austin is experienced in developing and implementing advocacy strategies at both state and federal levels,” said AACUL President Brad Miller. “He has developed a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by both leagues and credit unions. He is extremely knowledgeable about the broader political and policy landscape of the credit union system.”
New Structure
The AACUL noted it recently announced an evolved committee structure to support its recently updated mission, vision and strategic pillars. The new committee structure includes an advocacy committee supported by four strategy work groups.
“With our advocacy committee and strategy work group members appointed and our new advocacy director hired, we are hitting the ground running on our new strategic framework to better serve and support leagues and the credit union system,” said Miller.
