CHARLOTTE, N.C.–The credit union formed by the merger of Charlotte Metro CU and Greensboro, N.C.-based Premier FCU has a new name: Skyla Credit Union.
As CUToday.info reported, the two credit unions had announced plans to merge in early 2021 and officially completed the combination in June of this year. The combined CU has $1.096-billion in assets and more than 93,000 members.
“The (merger) challenges came with the new name,” CEO Eric Gelly told the Charlotte Business Journal. “The trademark took over a year, which is an insane amount of time for a trademark — due to the pandemic. The naming process we thought we'd be able to roll out with the operational rollout in August of last year. So it took a much longer time for just the branding piece.”
‘More Growth & Development’
Lori Thompson, former Premier CEO and now Skyla chief culture officer, told the Business Journal the credit union now has more than 250 employees.
“One of the really great parts of the merger was that all of our employees will have additional opportunities, more growth and more development,” Thompson told the publication. “So, it's really turned out to be a great opportunity for our employees.”
Gelly told the CBJ the merger has led to cost cuts that, in turn, have resulted in higher deposit rates and lower loan rates. No employees were laid off as a result of the merger.
About the New Name
Plans call for a new headquarters to open in 2023, along with a new flagship branch, which is under construction at 912 Central Ave. in Charlotte — separate from its headquarters.
As for the new brand, on its website Skyla said it is "an upbeat, affirmative, and aspirational name that speaks to the limitlessness that our consumers long for. Skyla is warm, relatable, and welcoming."
