WASHINGTON–What are credit unions watching for on Capitol Hill this week? Not much, as the new Congress continues to hammer out its own internal organization.
While the House and Senate are in session, both Republicans and Democrats are still working on committee assignments and ratios.
“We are breathlessly waiting, along with most of the D.C. area for who will be serving on most committees,” said Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer for federal affairs with CUNA. “The House Democratic leadership is meeting this week to set (committee) memberships. Fingers crossed be able to have a fully functioning House and Senate by the end of week. But there will be no committee activity this week that we will be. There could be an organizational hearing for the House Financial Services Committee next week.”
NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler said the number of Republicans and Democrats on each House committee will be similar to that of the prior Congress, but with GOP control the ratios will be flipped, with committees having approximately 39 Republican and 23 Democratic members. Thaler noted there have been some reductions made in the total number serving on the respective committees.
Democrats Meet
“The Democrats will be having a steering committee meeting this week and naming committee members and ranking members, possibly here by the end of the week, said Thaler. “We're also watching the Senate side, where committee ratios and membership should come into focus as well at the end of this week. Once the committees are in place we expect committee work will really kind of start in earnest here as soon as next week when members will be seated. We will also soon know the hearings on key topics of interest to credit unions.”
New Senator Welcomed
Stverak added CUNA will also join others in welcoming new senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE), who has been appointed to fill the term of former Sen. Ben Sasse, who left to become president of the University of Florida.
