CU CEO Testifying Before Congress This Week, But One Big Issue Looms Again

WASHINGTON–There are several congressional hearings of interest to credit unions and financial institutions this week, while one issue is looming over both sides of Congress.

Both the House and Senate are in session this week, although the House is in a short work week and then is to adjourn for a week.

Hearings credit unions will be watching this week include:

Tuesday

  • House Committee on Financial Services: Digital Assets and the Future of Finance: Understanding the Challenges and Benefits of Financial Innovation in the United States

Wednesday

  • Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry: Examining Digital Assets: Risks, Regulation and Innovation
  • Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs: The Role that CDFIs and Minority Depository Institutions Service in Supporting Communities. Testifying on behalf of NAFCU during the hearing will be Jeanne Kucey, president and CEO of JetStream FCU in Miami Lakes, Fla.

Thursday

  • Senate Banking Committee: How Institutional Landlords are Changing the Housing Market

The Overarching Issue

By overarching the congressional agenda is another frequent item: funding the federal government.

“There are (10) days until the government funding deadline hits,” pointed out Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer with CUNA. “The flavor du jour is that they will work out some sort of short-term (funding) resolution through March 11 Hopefully, it will get sorted out. The only issue is the House is to go into recess this Thursday and is supposed to be out all of next week. So if the work is not done by Wednesday, the House will have to come back and work on that.”
