WASHINGTON–In Tuesday’s primaries, credit union-backed candidates lost in two of four races that were contested.
In Alabama, where CUNA’s Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions were involved in two of the Republican primary races, CUs had thrown their support behind Jerry Carl, who defeated Bill Hightower in the first congressional district, and Jeff Colman in the second congressional district. But Coleman lost his race to Gary Moore.
Similarly, in Texas, CULAC and the Cornerstone league were involved in two races, both solidly Republican districts. In Texas 13, credit unions supported Josh Winegardner over former White House doctor Ronny Jackson, but Jackson won that race and will now head to November’s election. Texas credit unions also supported former Rep. Pete Sessions (R), who won his primary.
Credit unions were also supporting three candidates in Maine, all of whom ran unopposed: Republican Sen. Susan Collins and its two House members, both Democrats, Rep. Chellie Pingree and Rep. Jared Golden.
