CU-Backed Candidates Win In Primaries

WASHINGTON–Candidates who were backed by credit unions in this week’s primary races and run-offs all either won their races or are headed to a run-off.

Primary races and run-offs took place in seven states this week, with credit unions having taken active involvement in a number of those contests.

Elections were held in Colorado, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma, and Utah, and run-offs in Mississippi and South Carolina.

In races in which CUNA’s Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) and respective state associations were involved included:

  • Colorado 2nd District: In the Democratic primary, CUs backed Joe Neguse, who won two-thirds of the votes.
  • In New York’s 11th district, CULAC and the New York Credit Union Association supported the winner, incumbent Republican Dan Donovan.
  • In New York’s 25th district, CUs backed winner Joseph Morelle in the Democratic primary. Morelle, who has been serving as majority leader of the New York Assembly, won 45% of the vote.
  • In Oklahoma’s first district, Kevin Hern had the support of credit unions in a five-way race for the Republican nomination, but finished second to Tim Harris, who won 27.4% of vote. Hern won 22.6% of the vote. That race will now go to a run-off.
  • In a run-off in Mississippi’s third district, CULAC and the Mississippi Credit Union Association backed Michael Guest, who won 65%% of the vote in the primary.
  • In the Utah Senate race, credit unions supported  Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch. Romney won nearly two-thirds of the vote.
