SANTE FE, N.M.–A candidate who had the backing of credit unions has won a special election for an open House seat.
Democrat and New Mexico State Representative Melanie Stansbury won by a wide margin over Republican State Senator Mark Moores in a race to fill the seat vacated by Deb Haaland, who has been appointed Interior secretary by President Biden.
Both CUNA’s Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), which donated $5,000, and the Credit Union Association of New Mexico supported Stansbury in the race.
“Melanie took time to meet virtually with New Mexico credit union leaders and expressed her support for maintaining our tax-exempt status and praised credit unions for their hard work during the pandemic with PPP loans and more,” said Paul Stull, CEO of the Credit Union Association of New Mexico. “We are pleased to welcome her as New Mexico’s newest credit union champion.”
Stansbury has worked as an environmental policy expert and as a congressional and White House aide, and campaigned on economic fairness, the need to address climate change and the importance of Democrats’ retaining their four-seat House majority.
