CU-Backed Candidate Wins Congressional Special Election

LOS ANGELES–A candidate who had the backing of credit unions has won a special election here to fill a vacancy in Congress.

Jimmy Gomez

Democrat Jimmy Gomez, 42, has defeated fellow Democrat Robert Ahn in the race in California’s 34th Congressional District. CUNA’s PAC, the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC), and the California league had donated $10,000 to support Gomez.

The election to fill a vacancy representing the 34thcongressional district of California was necessary after Democrat Xavier Becerra was appointed as California’s attorney general. Gomez and Ahn were the top two vote-getters in a primary field of 23 candidates and advanced to the general election.

Gomez currently represents District 51 in the California State Assembly, and will now represent what the Los Angeles Times called one of the poorest, most immigrant-heavy districts in the state. The district stretches from downtown Los Angeles to Boyle Heights and incorporates Highland Park, Eagle Rock and Koreatown communities of California.
