WASHINGTON–Credit unions in Washington this week are paying attention to the same issue as everyone else—the funding of the federal government—and recognizing the same challenge as everyone else, as well—funding expires on March 1 and March 8, and Congress doesn’t return until Feb. 28.
Perhaps it will be a very productive Leap Day.
In addition to the funding for various government functions—the two deadlines apply to different departments currently being funded by a stopgap measure—a number of critical issues to credit unions are also affected.
Jason Stverak of America’s Credit Unions said that includes the National Flood Insurance Program, which is frequently caught up in Congress’ disfunction over funding the federal government.
Supporting the American Dream
“We will continually advocate that any legislation that passes needs to include an extension” for families who have succeeded in reaching the American Dream, said Stverak.
Congress is likely to be thick into discussion and dealmaking over the federal budget when credit unions show up in town next week for America’s Credit Unions’ Governmental Affairs Conference, the first to be held since the merger of NAFCU and CUNA.
