CU Alerts Members To Lost Laptop Containing Member Data

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Piedmont Advantage Credit Union said a laptop containing information on members is missing, but at this point it has no information indicating that any of that information is being used or has even been accessed.

In a letter to members, CEO Judy Tharp said the credit union discovered on Jan. 31, 2015 that the laptop was missing, and that it has contacted local authorities and a computer forensics company to investigate. The laptop was password protected.

“The information on the laptop may have included your name, address, date of birth member account number, Social Security number of a combination of these elements,” said Tharp in the letter. “We are taking an approach of utmost caution offering you one year of complimentary credit bureau monitoring service and if your information becomes accessed as part of this event, the credit union will provide restoration services from that point forward for a period of 24 months.”

The letter also provides a phone number for addition information.
