CFPB Planning Consumer Survey On Debt Collection Disclosures

WASHINGTON–The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said it plans to conduct an online survey of at least 8,000 people as part of a new research effort around

debt collection disclosures.

The CFBP announced the new initiative in a notice announcing it is seeking approval from the Office of Management and Budget for the effort.

The CFPB said the data collection survey, titled “Debt Collection Quantitative Disclosure Testing,” will explore consumer comprehension and decision making in response to debt collection disclosure forms. The CFPB said the survey will oversample respondents who have had experience with debt collection in the past.

The agency had actually published notice of the debt collection disclosure survey in 2017 and then withdrew it. It is now republishing the announcement.

Deadline Approaching

Separately, March 6 is the deadline to file comments on a different survey, “Making Ends Meet,” which will seek consumer feedback on experiences related to household financial shocks and how households respond to those shocks, including the use of credit products that do and do not appear in the Consumer Credit Panel (CCP).

The latter survey, the CFPB said, will seek feedback from 2,000 people and will be part of its “household balance sheets” research agenda.
