CEO Dies While Shoveling Snow

Mike Newman

MONROE, Mich.–Mike Newman, CEO of Monroe County Community CU here, has died.

Mr. Newman, 59, died of an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow at his home, according to the Monroe News.

The publication reported Newman will be remembered by community and business leaders as “someone who had a kind heart and an incredible passion for credit unions.”

Mr. Newman joined the credit union in 1983 and was named president/CEO on April 1, 2011.

Barry Kinsey, director of workforce development at Monroe County Community College, who is chairman of the credit union, told the Monroe News, "Mike started his career as a teller and moved his way up to president," Mr. Kinsey said.

Newman and Kinsey were just in Washington for GUNA’s GAC.

"So many people across the country knew and respected Mike and what he meant to credit unions," Kinsey told the Monroe News. "He wasn't focused on the assets, but the members.”

Newman is survived by his wife, Debbie, and grown children Chad and Jennifer.

The credit union announced that all branches will be closed on Saturday, March 18, for the funeral.

The $188-million Monroe County Community CU has 28,000 members.
