Busy Week in Congress, But CUs Watching One Hearing

WASHINGTON—While Congress will have a busy week, the credit union focus will be primarily on one hearing, CUNA reported.

Jason Stverak

“It is a pretty busy week in Congress,” said Jason Stverak, CUNA deputy chief advocacy officer for federal government affairs, citing House discussions this week on appropriations bills, healthcare, abortion legislation and possibly assault weapons.

On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing on the oversight of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

“Obviously, this is a hearing that directly impacts credit unions and CUNA will be paying close attention to this,” Stverak said, adding the trade association will also be watching the hearing held Tuesday by the  Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee (see below).

Hearings this week:

Tuesday

  • At 2 p.m. ET, the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hybrid hearing to discuss how mass shootings harm communities, local economics, and economic growth
  • At 2:30 p.m. ET, the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development will hold a hearing on the opportunities and challenges in addressing homelessness
  • The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing to discuss racism, discrimination, and fairness in financial services

Wednesday

  • At 10 a.m. ET, the House Financial Services Committee will hold a hybrid hearing to provide oversight of the Federal Housing Finance Agency

NAFCU added that it continues to monitor the House Energy and Commerce Committee for a markup on data privacy legislation.
