Breach 1.0: Lunchroom Kiosk Purchase May Cause Financial Indigestion

TUKWILA, Wash.–Avanti Markets, which operates food and other product kiosks in lunch areas and break rooms in companies across the country, is reporting the nearly 2,000 of those kiosks have been breached by hackers.

The company, which claims to have more than 1.6-million customers in 46 states, said in a statement those hackers were able to obtain data on payment card users that includes first and last names, credit and debit card numbers, and card expiration dates.

In addition, according to the company, some people who use its Market Card solution may have also had their names and email addresses stolen, as well as their biometric information if they used the kiosk's biometric verification functionality."

Market Card, available as an app for Android and iPhone devices, enables users to load cash, or funds via payment cards, onto a dedicated card.

The company said an initial investigation has led it to believe the breach took place over a three-day period, beginning July 2. Many companies in which the Avanti Markets’ kiosks are located would have been closed for several of those days due to the July 4 holiday.

Avanti has said it has worked to eliminate the malware from its machines. The company has not indicated how many people may be affected.

“We are working to make available credit monitoring services at no cost to those individuals whose personal information has been compromised, and will be providing information shortly about the services and enrollment,” the company said in a statement on its website.
