Birmingham City CU Buys New Building, Mulls Expansion of FOM

NORTH BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–Birmingham City Credit Union is moving to a new location and also looking to expand its field of membership.

BCCU will be relocating from its current location to a new, 3,600-square-foot location it purchased for $125,000, Carrie Player, Birmingham City CU CEO, told the Birmingham Business Journal.

Player told the publication moving to its own location as opposed to leasing allows the $9.9-million credit union to “try to grow and help others within the city of Birmingham, possibly, not just the employees of the city.”

Its new building was formerly a Sloss Credit Union location that later became a Secure First location and then a Mutual Savings location before closing, the publication reported, adding that it will include a drive-thru, which the current location doesn’t have, and a conference room and a training room.

Financial Education Training

Player told the Birmingham Business Journal that the credit union will use the latter to host financial education and life skills training courses along with other community events for city employees and local residents.

Player said the credit union obtained $50,000 in CDFI and NCUA grant funding for community education events.

BBCU has approximately 2,300 members.

The credit union currently has four full-time employees and one part-time employee, but Player told the Business Journal that number will grow if the credit union grows.

Birmingham City Credit Union currently only serves active and retired city employees, not including police or fire department employees, who have separate credit unions. It currently has 2,400 members.

In the next three to six months, the credit union may expand services to non-city employee residents in certain areas if its services are determined to be a fit for the area, Player told the Business Journal.
