Big. Bright. Minds. Coverage: Leverage ‘The Wisdom of Crowds’

RALEIGH-DURHAM, N.C.–Credit unions gathered here were urged to recognize (and leverage) the “wisdom of crowds.”

Mark Meyer kicks off Big. Bright. Minds. meeting

Kicking off Filene’s big. bright. minds conference, Filene President & CEO Mark Meyer observed there is “no one source of truth or information,” but there is, as the adage goes “wisdom in crowds,” said Meyer.

“Look around this room at the perspectives you all have from across the country and the world, and also the shared values and things we hold dear,” said Meyer.

Meyer pointed to the dichotomy of modern day life. “It’s such a great time to be alive. I think of my great grandparents who first generation immigrants from Denmark. It was a very difficult life. And then think about today.”

Despite the technology marvels of the modern world and far less labor-intensive workplaces, Meyer said many face financial challenges. He pointed out two-in-10 people live entirely in retirement on social security, and for five in will use Social Security for half their retirement income.

“We also live in a time with very big problems,” said Meyer. “Pause and think about what to do. Is it government, business or the essence of us working together, to think forward, to create change in the lives of people?”
