Biden Administration Nominates Goldsmith-Romero for FDIC Chair

WASHINGTON–The Biden Administration has nominated Christy Goldsmith Romero to become chairman of the FDIC.

Christy Goldsmith Romero

If confirmed by the Senate, Goldsmith-Romero would replace current board Chairman Martin J. Gruenberg, who announced in May he would resign once his successor is confirmed.

As CUToday.info has been reporting, Gruenberg has served as either a member, vice chairman or chairman of the agency for 19 years, but he has over the past year been the subject of strong criticism for overseeing a culture of sexual harassment at the FDIC that has been called a “sexualized boys club.” An extensive independent report launched after reports of the culture at the FDIC became public also said many in the agency feared Gruenberg due to his temper.

CFTC Commissioner

In nominating Goldsmith-Romero for the FDIC post, the White House noted she has served as a commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) since March 2022, where she oversees CFTC-registered banks, brokers, exchanges, clearinghouses, funds, and commodity producers.

Prior to that, Romero’s was with the Treasury Department, including a decade-long stint as special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), where she led a nationwide, independent law enforcement and audit watchdog office that conducted oversight” over TARP, “in which the federal government became a shareholder in more than 700 banks, among other programs,” the White House said.

Also on the Resume

Goldsmith-Romero has also:

  • Been an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center and University of Virginia Law School from 2019 to 2021
  • Served for six years at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The White House has also nominated Kristin N. Johnson to be assistant secretary for financial institutions at the Treasury Department. That position serves as the Treasury’s principal liaison to the federal financial institution regulators. She is also now a commissioner of the CFTC.
