PANAMA CITY, Fla.–Bay Credit Union has named a new president and CEO. The credit union has selected Mike Akers to lead the organization. Akers has more than 17 years’ experience in credit unions.
Akers previously served as CEO of the $44.7-million FLAG Credit Union in Tallahassee.
“He was known as an excellent financial strategist as well as a strong team leader,” the credit union said in a statement. “He oversaw the credit union’s record-setting growth in loan production and revenue. During his first year of leadership the credit union was named the Credit Union of the Year in their asset class from the League of Southeastern Credit Unions.”
The credit union added that one of Akers’ strengths is “finding ways to improve the bottom line through efficiency and revenue growth.”
The $106-million Bay Credit Union said that in his first month as CEO Akers has already made an impact, renegotiating contracts and streamlining processes to save the credit union hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.
“I’m excited for this opportunity to serve our Bay area community and continue to strengthen the relationships we’ve built with our members. Like many of our neighbors, we’re still in the process of recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Michael. It’s a new day at Bay, and I’m proud to be a part of the rebuilding process.”
Akers earned both an undergraduate and a master’s degree from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., and subsequently became a Community Development Certified Financial Counselor and a Credit Union Development Educator.
