Banks Urged To Consider New .Bank Domain Name

LOS ANGELES–The nation’s banks are being urged to switch to the top-level domain .bank, as it offers better security than the .com domain, according to some analysts.

The .bank domain is available only to companies that have been vetted by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization responsible for among other things, domain names, and by fTLD Registry Services, which the financial services industry chartered to oversee the security and trust of the .bank and .insurance domain names.

The .bank and .insurance domains are estimated to cost between $1,000 and $2,000 each, substantially more than the $10 or less it can cost to register an Internet domain. But analysts say the cost is well worth the increased security and peace of mind they bring.
