KOLOA, Kauai–Attendees at the recent Volunteer Leadership Institute hosted by Rochdale raised more than $36,000 for the Maui Credit Union Relief Fund, which is providing assistance to those victimized by the fires on the island in 2023.
“The recent wildfires have deeply affected us all. At this crucial time, the credit union's commitment to helping others becomes more important than ever,” said Rochdale CEO Tony Ferris. “This donation, made on behalf of Rochdale, its VLI conference attendees and credit unions, embodies our dedication to these shared values. We extend our sincere thanks for your united efforts, which have significantly impacted the lives of those affected by this disaster. Mahalo.”
The funds were donated to the Valley Isles Chapter of the Hawaii Credit Union League Maui Wildfire Relief Fund to help “further their efforts in making a meaningful difference in the Lahaina area.”
As CUToday.info reported earlier, credit unions on Maui have been active in helping people in Lahaina, which was completely destroyed by the fire, to rebuild their lives.
Of the approximately 100 people who died in the fire, 27 were members of Maui County FCU, which has a branch in Lahaina. Several members of the CU’s staff and board also lost homes.
“Much mahalo to Tony Ferris and Rochdale and its many volunteers who generously made donation to the Credit Union Wildfire Relief Fund,” said Gary Fukuroku, CEO of Maui County Credit Union. “We know that it will take years for recovery and the funds raised will truly help the recovery efforts. Having grown up in Lahaina and lost our family home, along with thousands of others, the task at hand is monumental. But the resiliency of the community will prevail. We are Maui Strong!”
