Attempt Fails at Attaching Credit Card Competition Act to Larger Bill in Senate

WASHINGTON—By a vote of 85-12, the Senate has rejected an effort by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) to consider unrelated amendments, including the Credit Card Competition Act, to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization.

Sen. Roger Marshall

As CUToday.info has reported, America’s Credit Unions has opposed the Credit Card Competition Act, arguing the legislation to extend interchange routing requirements to credit cards will hurt consumers, small businesses, and credit unions while “big box” retailers “pad their pockets.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), cosponsor of the legislation, was among those who voted against the effort to consider it as an amendment.

Most Washington analysts have said the only way the bill, which has strong support from retailers, will pass this Congress would be as an attachment to some must-pass legislation. Marshall has promised supporters on several occasions that he will bring the legislation to a vote in the current Congress.
