At Least One CU Office Damaged by Earthquake in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska–At least one credit union branch suffered sufficient damage from the 7.0 magnitude earthquake here that it had to be closed, while other CU branches were closed over the weekend as damage is assessed and power remained out and roads repairs were under way in some areas.

Credit Union 1 reported its Eagle River, Alaska branch will remain closed “until further notice” while repairs are made, although it noted its ATM remains operational and is accepting deposits.

Denali Credit Union, a division of Nuvision CU, closed its branch in Eagle River and in the Northway Mall over the weekend, and said some of its ATMs were also offline. Its branch in Wasilla, Alaska was also closed Saturday. It was offering members updates on the status of offices and its ATMs via its website and Facebook page.

Northern Skies CU said its branch in O’Malley, as well as its ATM, were closed due to power outages, and that it was hopeful it would be open for business as usual beginning today.

Matanuska Valley FCU closed its offices over the weekend in Eagle River and Palmer, Alaska, but said its other branches and service remained open.

Local officials said power had been returned to majority of residents who had lost power, although strong winds over the weekend were hampering efforts.

Residents in Anchorage were urged to boil water as the result of a number of water main breaks.
