Ascent FCU To Merge With Goldenwest, Creating Nearly $4-Billion Cooperative In Northern Utah

OGDEN, Utah—The $170-million Ascent Federal Credit Union here has announced plans to merge with $3.9-billiion Goldenwest Credit Union, based in Washington Terrace, Utah.

If approved by members, the combined organization would operate 55 branches, hold nearly $4 billion in assets, and serve more than 215,000 members.

Members of Ascent will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed consolidation, with additional voting details to be shared “in the coming weeks,” the credit union said.

Both Ascent and Goldenwest were founded in Ogden and remain headquartered in Weber County. Ascent said the merger would allow the institution to “elevate our mission to new heights while remaining true to our history.”

As part of the agreement, Ascent would adopt a familiar name: Weber State Credit Union, a division of Goldenwest, aligning the brand once again with Weber State University. Ascent FCU was founded in 1957 as Weber College Employees Federal Credit Union.

Ascent CEO Brock Mortensen said the partnership would deliver significant benefits to members, including expanded branch access—members would gain entry to 51 additional Goldenwest locations across Utah and Idaho.

“This is a strategic step to ensure long-term value and added convenience for you and your family,” Mortensen said.
