As Congress Heads Home, Trades Urge District Contacts

WASHINGTON—As Congress begins its seven-week recess, NAFCU and CUNA are urging credit unions to engage with lawmakers in their home districts on issues affecting the movement.

“Credit union advocates need to use every opportunity they have to get their message out there,” said NAFCU Director of Political Affairs Dan O’Brien. “This election year, credit unions have ample opportunity to see their representatives face-to-face and make those connections.”

CUNA Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer Eli Joseph also stated that CUNA is reminding credit unions of the opportunity now to speak with state legislators. Joseph also noted that this week CUNA will send Congress a letter showing its support for legislation introduced by Congressmen Denny Heck (D-WA) and Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) that would bring greater transparency to NCUA’s overhead transfer rate.

CUNA said that it also plans to send a comment letter to NCUA on the agency’s executive compensation proposal.
