WASHINGTON–There’s a bit of a twist when it comes to credit unions and the two likely presidential candidates in 2024—the CU community already has experience with not one, but both candidates.
Given that he’s the incumbent, of course, credit unions are already familiar with President Biden and his administration’s position on credit unions and credit union issues.
But his likely opponent, Donald Trump, also has a relatively recent track record with credit unions, as well. When other candidates run credit unions typically need to parse their legislative records in previous posts or their campaign planks to discern their positions.
Greg Mesack of America’s Credit Unions said he expects the trade group will be in closer contact with both campaigns—or another campaign should Trump not secure the Republican nomination—in the near future.
“We worked with the Trump administration very well in his previous term as president,” said Mesack. “He was a strong supporter of credit unions and had a good track record with credit unions and I don't think anything's changed in that sense.”
Should Nikki Haley become the Republican nominee, Mesack said South Carolina’s credit unions have had a good relationship with her while she’s been governor of that state.
CUs in Attendance at Events
“Regardless if it is President Trump or Gov. Haley or Gov. DeSantis on the Republican side, and with President Bident and Vice President (Kamala) Harris on the Democratic side, we will aggressively engage our principles,” said Mesack. “I'm fairly confident as the Republican candidates were around Iowa and as the Democratic candidates and Republican candidates are in other states, that credit union leaders and members have been showing up at events to make sure that their voices are heard.
Jason Stverak of America’s Credit Unions said Trump has had a track record of openness in hearing from credit unions and their issues.
“Obviously, we've been steadily we've been actively engaged with the Biden- Harris administration since they were inaugurated in 2021,” said Stverak.
