FAIRFAX, Va.–As a tie-in to its own name, Apple FCU continues to roll out commercials that mimic the Mac Vs. PC commercials from Apple Computer—as it was known then—that ran from 2006-2009.
In the Apple Computer ads—the campaign was officially known as “Get a Mac”–actor John Hodgman played a stiff, dorky character who introduced himself as “I’m a PC” opposite a cooler character portrayed by actor Justin Long who introduced himself as “I’m a Mac.” In all, Apple Computer created 66 of the satirical and popular television commercials (all of which have been compiled into one YouTube video here.
The new ads from Apple Federal Credit Union–which has created a website at www.theotherapple.org–use similar characters, with an older banker in a pinstriped suit appearing opposite a younger man in a red Apple FCU shirt.
“At Apple Federal, we have really great people,” says the Apple FCU rep.
“Hey! We have ‘people’,” responds the bank character. “But our legal team feels that saying, ‘Great people’ could be overpromising’.”
The banker puts air quotes on the words “great people.”
“Gee, that’s kind of sad,” says the Apple FCU rep.
‘No Limit to Bigosity’
In a separate spot, the Apple FCU rep introduces himself, “I’m Apple Federal Credit Union,” and the banker adds, “And I’m a big bank.”
“We’re big enough to be big enough to have everything you need without being too big,” the Apple FCU rep says.
“And we’re big enough to be able to get bigger and bigger. There’s no limit to our bigosity,” the banker says, before beginning to dance.
“What are you doing there?” the Apple FCU rep asks.
“Getting biggie with it,” the banker answers.
Another spot highlights free vs “fee checking,” as can be seen here.
Other Ads
The ads from Apple FCU are not the first it has run in which it plays off the brand of the famous technology company. Apple FCU, which was founded in 1956 to serve teachers in Fairfax, Va., hence the change to its current name, in 2018 also created an ad that satirized the technology company’s famous product reveals.
The $2.7-billion Apple FCU has approximately 209,000 members.
