Another Retailer Reports It’s Been Breached

BELLEVUE, Wash.–Outdoor apparel retailer Eddie Bauer has become the latest to warn that it has suffered a computer breach.

As has been the case with numerous recent breaches, the company said malware had infected its point-of-sale systems over a six-month period before it was discovered.

The company has 360 stores in the United States and Canada, and it says that every one of them may have been hit by what it is calling a "sophisticated attack."

In its announcement of the breach Eddie Bauer declined to say how many customers may have had their payment card compromised, saying instead that it is reaching out directly to customers who might have been compromised.

In a letter to its customers, CEO Mike Egeck said, “We determined that customers' payment card information used at our retail stores on various dates between Jan. 2, 2016 and July 17, 2016 may have been accessed. Not all cardholder transactions during this period were affected. Payment card information used online at eddiebauer.com was not affected."

According to the company the attackers obtained cardholder names, payment card numbers, security codes and expiration dates for customers who bought or returned products.
