MADISON, Wis.–The 2022 International Credit Union Day theme has been announced: “Empower Your Financial Future with a Credit Union.”
International CU Day will take place on Oct. 22 during International Credit Union Week.
According to CUNA, ICU Day festivities will include community fundraisers, contests, picnics, and parades. The day is being sponsored by CUNA Strategic Services and Zogo Finance.
“The annual celebration aims to help more people improve their financial well-being through accessible and affordable products and services provided by their local credit union,” according to CUNA.
Megan Crowson, manager of consumer engagement with CUNA said the goal is for more people to understand the important role credit unions play in their community.
“If we can encourage someone to reach out to a credit union for help on their financial journey, then this program was a success,” added Crowson.
Resources Available
To help credit unions celebrate and further their mission, CUNA said it is offering a wide range of resources including customizable materials as well as no-cost and fee-based creative bundles designed to educate consumers about the value credit unions provide.

EMPOWER Fundraiser
In addition, leading up to International Credit Union Day, the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) will be hosting an “EMPOWER” fundraiser and story collection campaign during the first 20 days of October.
“EMPOWER encourages the U.S. credit union community to look beyond the borders of its local communities to donate to the campaign in support of growing credit union membership through credit union development while sharing stories of empowerment locally, nationally, and internationally,” CUNA said.
More Than 1 Billion Unbanked
Added WOCCU President and CEO Elissa McCarter Laborde, “There are still 1.4 billion people across the globe who are unbanked. Credit unions truly have the perfect business model to empower their financial future and that is a message we hope our entire global movement will celebrate and promote on Thursday, October 2O.”
