LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.—The average price of a used vehicle for model years 2010-2014 depreciated by 0.5% during May, with sub-compact cars taking the biggest hit, according to Black Book.

Overall, cars saw slightly higher depreciation during May at 1.0%, compared with trucks, which dropped 0.2% on the month.

Sub-compact values declined by 2.4% in May. Minivans saw their segment values unchanged during the month. Four vehicle segments saw value increases during May, including full-size cars (+0.1%), full-size pickups (+0.1%), sporty cars (+0.2%) and sub-compact luxury CUVs (+0.3%).

“Now that summer is quickly approaching, it is not surprising to see in-demand segments such as sporty cars and sub-compact luxury utilities see better demand and retention at the auctions currently,” said Anil Goyal, senior vice president of automotive valuation and Analytics. “We anticipate that this summer will see its usual pattern of higher depreciation settling in for most cars and even slightly higher patterns for certain truck segments due to higher volume.”
