SHREWSBURY, Mass.—A new study reveals a lot of gift-givers are really thinking about themselves when they buy prepaid plastic this holiday season.
Data from Mercator Advisory group indicates 39% of buyers give retail-specific gift cards as presents. But many of those same buyers, 28%, buy gift cards to claim the rewards, the report states.
A similar number, 26%, buy prepaid gift cards as a way to get a discount, noted the Payments Journal in its analysis.
“Consumers report plenty of other reasons to buy prepaid retailer-specific gift cards, apart from using them as gifts, they include seeing prepaid gift cards as a safe and more private way to buy online (19%),” Payments Journal said.
