An Overlooked Area Of CU Weakness, And How To Fix It

AUSTIN, Texas–It is one of the most overlooked areas within credit unions, and yet also one of the most critical: the onboarding of new employees.

“Credit union staff, who are literally the face of the credit union to nearly all members, are often thrown into the mix of daily operations with on-the-fly training and little sense they are personally valued and with little understanding of what a credit union even is,” observed Frank J. Diekmann, Cooperator-in-Chief at CUToday.info. “This happens even though investing in new employees on the front-end can make all the difference on the back end on everything from member service to staff turnover to growth to expense management.”

Some credit unions, however, recognize how critical onboarding new employees is to the success of a CU, Diekmann added, explaining it’s the primary reason the CUTomorrow Conference will kick off with a session led by a credit union that is among the best at welcoming new employees and ensuring they feel valued and, in turn, are a value to the credit union.

That CU, Portland, Ore.-based Trailhead CU, and its CEO, Jim McCarthy, will help to launch two days of discussion at CUTomorrow, scheduled for Sept. 9-11 in Austin, Texas. The meeting is priced at just $499.

“If you don’t effectively onboard employees, you’ll never effectively onboard new members,” said Diekmann.

The low registration fee of $499 is being made possible due to the support of sponsors that include Catalyst Corporate, Volcorp, Harland Clarke, CU*Answers, Emery Financial Group, CUNA Mutual AdvantEdge Analytics, and Your Marketing Co.

James L. This & Associates is also co-sponsoring the meeting.
