An Odd Week In Washington For The House; Little Activity In Senate

Ryan Donovan

WASHINGTON–What was supposed to be a recess week for the House has turned into an odd work week as Congress, after a compromise, was assembled to re-open the federal government through Feb. 8.

As a result, the House has no other work or hearing scheduled for the week.

Both the CFPB, which is funded by the Fed, and NCUA, which is funded by credit unions, have remained open and operating, with the agency hosting its board meeting on Thursday, as CUToday.info reported here.

The Senate will be holding hearings on pending nominations. On Thursday, the Senate Banking Committee will hold a hearing on CFIUS Reform: Administration Perspectives on the Essential Elements (CFIUS is the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S.). CUNA’s Ryan Donovan said the association will monitor the hearing.

Separately, during a call with the media, CUNA’s Richard Gose noted 2018 marks the 20th year of CUNA’s Campaign Schools, which focus on how to run for office in local elections.

“These are great ways for credit unions to connect with state and local offices,” said Gose. “Those are the congressmen and women of the future. It’s non-partisan. It’s ‘Here’s how you run an effective campaign. They’ve proven to be quite successful.”
