WASHINGTON—America’s Credit Unions is closing in on naming a successor to outgoing President/CEO Jim Nussle, with finalists now identified and an official announcement expected soon.
In an exclusive statement to CUToday.info, Karen Harbin, vice chair of America’s Credit Unions board and chair of ACU’s CEO Selection Committee, acknowledged the growing interest surrounding the high-profile leadership search.
"We’re aware there has been intense speculation around the CEO search, and we appreciate everyone’s patience throughout this important process,” said Harbin. “The search has been thorough and highly competitive, with a strong pool of candidates who reflect the values and vision of America’s Credit Unions. We’re pleased with the finalists under consideration and expect to make a formal announcement in the coming weeks, pending full board approval."
While the organization has not confirmed any names, sources within the credit union movement suggested finalists include Ryan Donovan, president and CEO of the Council of Federal Home Loan Banks and former CUNA chief advocacy officer; Rodney Hood, former NCUA chairman and former acting Comptroller of the Currency, and Scott Simpson, CEO at California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues & Utah Credit Union Association.
As CUToday.info has previously reported, Nussle announced his retirement in April but committed to staying on through the selection of a new president/CEO and to help guide the credit union industry through the ongoing fight over the federal tax exemption.
Industry insiders continue to debate the type of leadership needed at this pivotal moment. Should the trade association prioritize a politically savvy operator who can build bridges across party lines—including with the Trump Administration—or a strategic thinker equipped to steer credit unions through a rapidly shifting financial landscape?
Early in the selection process in May, sources within the credit union movement speaking to CUToday.info on background pointed to Hood as a leading contender. Other names that emerged included former NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar, ACU Chief Advocacy Officer Carrie Hunt, and GoWest Credit Union Association President and CEO Troy Stang.
Sources within the movement told CUToday.info this week if the final choice narrows to Simpson and Hood, Hood could gain the advantage—particularly if alignment with the Trump Administration is a key factor in the board’s decision.
