COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio Credit Union Foundation said it is hosting a virtual birthday celebration for the “mother of credit unions,” Louise McCarren Herring on Sept. 20.
Herring was one of the original signers of the 1934 constitution that created the Credit Union National Association during a meeting in Estes Park, Calif. She also founded the Ohio Credit Union League and is credited with helping to start more than 500 credit unions. Herring died in 1987.
To help Ohioans celebrate, the Ohio Credit Union Foundation said it will be offering "party in a box" packages for groups from one person to 60, the Foundation said.
"The Ohio Credit Union Movement would not exist without the relentless drive and passion demonstrated by Mrs. Herring,” said Ohio Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Kimberly Connor in a statement. “On what would have been Louise's 112 birthday, we want to keep her legacy and passion for equal and fair access to quality financial services alive. We invite everyone to join us virtually to celebrate her remarkable achievements and life. In addition, funds raised for the event will continue the credit union philosophy of people helping people through Foundation grants and scholarships."
The event is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
