GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A adult male who allegedly robbed a branch of ATL Federal Credit Union here was shot and killed by local police.
Authorities stated that the robbery occurred near 10 a.m. at the 36th Street office of the credit union. Police said the robber had a gun and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, and that no one at the credit union was harmed.
The suspect fled the crime scene in a car with a license plate registered to Rent-A-Center, 24 Hour News 8 reported, and was spotted only minutes later by police who began a pursuit. Authorities stated the man was driving recklessly.
The chase ended minutes later as Grand Rapids police pursued the robber to an apartment complex nearby. Police said the crook exited the car with a handgun and most of the cash, with some of the money still in the vehicle and dropped in the apartment complex parking lot.
24 Hour News 8 reported that two Kentwood officers followed the man to the backyard of a home on Holyoke Drive SE, west of the complex, where gunshots were fired and “lethal use of force was applied.” GRPD said the suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.
“I think (the officers) acted properly. We are going to have to let the investigation of course run its course and make sure we know all the facts. But what I know right now, it would appear that way, yes,” Kentwood Police Chief Tom Hillen told 24 Hour News 8.
He said those involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
