All’s Quiet on the Washington Front, But NAFCU Expects Change is 'Right Around the Corner’

ARLINGTON, Va.–While Capitol Hill has been relatively quiet with the new Congress falling into place, especially on issues of interest to credit unions, a “lot of action is right around the corner,” according to one NAFCU advocate in Washington.

Brad Thaler

As CUToday.info reported earlier this week, the Republicans have now made most of their appointments to committee and subcommittee chairmanships having now taken control of the House.

That includes the House Committee on Financial Services and a newly created subcommittee on fintech, noted NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler. The Democrats are also finalizing their committee memberships.

Thaler noted smaller changes are also taking place in the Senate, where the Democrats picked up a seat in the mid-year elections. That means Democrats will also have a roughly one-seat advantage in Senate committees, Thaler pointed out.

“Probably by the end of next week we should have most of the committee details out of the way and then that paves the way then to get down to hearings. There is a lot going on behind the scenes,” said Thaler. “There is a lot of action right around the corner.”
