WINNIPEG, Manitoba—Some members of Access Credit Union here have launched a petition to get a second vote on a merger with Assiniboine Credit Union, which was thwarted last week when a member vote came up 25 votes short.
If the merger had been OK’d, it would have created the largest credit union in the province with 155,000 members. More than 90% of Assiniboine CU’s members voted to approve the deal. CUToday.info’s story on what took place with the vote appears here.
CBC News reported that approximately a dozen ACU members are behind the petition drive aimed at getting a new vote.
Meanwhile, CBC News also reported that at least one of the Access CU members who voted against the merger did so because he opposed Asssiniboine CU’s support of LGBT organizations, including Pride Winnipeg and Rainbow Resource Center.
Access CU’s management reported that the issue was never raised during the membership meeting at which the vote took place, which was held inside a church.
