After Arrest of Employee and Troubling Earlier Reports, Senator Wants a ‘Cleaning of the House’ at FDIC

WASHINGTON–A U.S. senator is calling for a “cleaning of the house” at the FDIC.

The demand came this week after Mark Black, 50, a longtime employee and attorney with the FDIC, pleaded guilty to sexually exploiting children online. Black pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to produce child pornography and one count of coercion and enticement. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 30 and faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Joni Ernst

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) said she wants more information on how the agency dealt with Black, as well as an update on the ongoing investigation of the “toxic” workplace culture at the FDIC.

As CUToday.info reported, several congressional hearings have already been held following a Wall Street Journal investigation that found a “sexualized boys club” at the agency and reports of sexual harassment, peeing from the roof of a hotel owned by the FDIC and more.

Numerous members of Congress have called for FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg to step down.

The FDIC has hired a law firm to conduct an investigation.

‘Deeply Horrifying’

"I cannot help but draw the connection between the allegations from the Wall Street Journal and the fact that Mr. Black walked the halls of the FDIC at the same time he was participating — for years — in this deeply horrifying and stomach-turning behavior," Ernst wrote in a letter sent to the agency. "Perhaps nothing more encapsulates the FDIC’s dire need for a cleaning of the house."
