Affinity Cards II: Forget Loan Sharks; CU’s New Program With College is For Spending Sharks

MEDFORD, N.Y.– Suffolk Federal has introduced a Sharks Checking Program in conjunction with the Suffolk Community College Foundation and Suffolk County Community College.

Suffolk County Community College’s athletic teams are called the Sharks.

In addition to earning  rewards for card usage, new and current members who open a Sharks Checking account will assist in providing scholarships to incoming students across the school’s three campuses – Selden, Brentwood and Riverhead, the credit union said.

Members who enroll in the program receive a co-branded Sharks debit card, which offers 500 sign-on bonus rewards points through Suffolk Federal’s uChoose Rewards enrollment. Five cents of each signature-based transaction, with a maximum of $350 per card per year, will be donated back to the Suffolk Community College Foundation. The program is one of many Suffolk Federal ongoing opportunities which support the college’s foundation and benefit Suffolk County Community College students. Recently, Suffolk Federal provided $37,650 to local students through its scholarship program.  The credit union said it is also offering free online financial education workshops to students from the college.

‘Make a Significant Difference’

“As part of our ongoing relationship with Suffolk County Community College, we thought it would make sense to extend an opportunity to our members so they too can make a significant difference for the college and give back through purchases they would already be making,” explained VP-Marketing Krista Svedberg. “This is just one of the many ways we continue to implement unique opportunities to support and shape our future leaders of tomorrow today.”

Suffolk FCU said as an added incentive, all Sharks Checking account members will receive special bonuses just for signing up. By completing online banking registration, members will receive a $20 e-Gift card to Amazon, Starbucks or Barnes & Noble. Those who enroll in paperless eStatements will receive an additional $5 e-Gift card to their choice of select retailers.
“Suffolk Federal has continued to offer so many important resources and opportunities to our campus community and we feel such pride knowing that our students and alumni are receiving professional support along their financial journey,” said Louis Petrizzo, interim president of Suffolk County Community College.
