Administration Nominees, Hearings Have CU Attention This Week

WASHINGTON—Trump administration nominees considered by the Senate this week are a focus for CUNA and NAFCU as both the House and Senate are back on session.

“As usual, we will be engaged in a number of committee meetings on both sides of the Capitol this week, including the Senate Banking Committee Tuesday holding a full-committee hearing to consider several nominations by the Trump administration,” said CUNA Chief Advocacy Officer Ryan Donovan.

The committee will meet today at 10 a.m. to consider nominees to the Treasury and Commerce Departments. Witnesses will include nominees for assistant Treasury secretary and undersecretary for the Treasury's Office of Terrorism and Financial Crimes.

On Wednesday, the House Small Business Committee will hold a hearing to review the Small Business Administration's 7(a) loan program and evaluate its success in helping creditworthy small businesses obtain capital. Witnesses will include the director of the SBA's Office of Credit Risk Management and the associate administrator of the agency's Office of Capital Access."
NAFCU said it will be closely monitoring testimony from Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin during a Senate Banking Committee hearing Thursday on domestic and international policy. NAFCU lobbyists will be focusing on any developments potentially impacting credit unions, the trade association said.

NAFCU said it will also be monitoring the House Ways and Means Committee's discussions on tax reform, which will begin with a hearing on Thursday: "How Tax Reform Will Grow Our Economy and Create Jobs."

CUNA said it will follow proceedings, as well, and submit a letter for the record prior to the hearing.

On Monday NAFCU staff met with NACHA – The Electronic Payments Association staff to discuss same-day ACH implementation and how it's impacting credit unions that originate and receive payments. The meeting also covered developments from the Federal Reserve's Faster Payments Task Force, of which NAFCU is a member.
Also this week, the deadline for comments to the CFPB on alternative data that could establish credit history is Friday.
