A Reminder to Get Out to Lunch During International CU Week

ANN ARBOR, Mich.–CU Lunch Local is reminding that even with the COVID-19 pandemic, plans remain in place again this year for CUs to be involved in a national effort aimed at supporting one segment of small businesses during International Credit Union Week.

Scheduled for Oct. 13, the ninth annual CU Lunch Local encourages credit unions, regulators, CUSOs and the broader CU community to support locally owned restaurants by buying breakfast, lunch, or dinner at some of their favorite spots.

Again this year  participating credit unions and organizations are asked to share their participation on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

“CU Lunch Local isn’t just about eating great food from your favorite local business, it’s about showing support for the businesses in the communities we serve,” says Bill Beardsley, CEO of Michigan Business Connection, which sponsors CU Lunch Local. “With the current pandemic climate and so many small, local businesses struggling financially, now is the perfect time to come together by giving back and buying local.”

A Pandemic, But…

The organization noted that this year, given COVID-19 restrictions, event coordinators recognize many organizations may be wondering how to best “cash mob” at a time when going to lunch in groups and/or community lunches are discouraged.

“To help individuals participate in and promote the effort, CU Lunch Local coordinators have created a selfie form with the CU Lunch Local logo, a brief description of CU Lunch Local and a spot to fill out the name of the credit union or business supporting the event,” Michigan Business Connection said.

Michigan Business Connection added it is encouraging participants to print, fill out, and snap a selfie of themselves with the flyer and someone from the establishment and post it on social media. Those flyers can be left with businesses to demonstrate the impact credit unions have on their local communities.
