A Long Way From The Cockatoo Inn: NAFCU Celebrates Its 50th

Dan Berger

ARLINGTON, Va.–NAFCU has officially kicked off festivities to mark its 50th anniversary in 2017.

The celebration, themed “50 Years Strong & Growing Stronger,” is to run all year and was kicked off with a video highlighting the association’s history of serving, leading and representing the interests of credit unions at the federal level.

“What began as a small association has grown into the leading credit union advocate in Washington, D.C., which couldn’t have been accomplished without our members and the visionary credit union leaders who came before us. We are forever grateful for their efforts,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “As we serve our members, we’ll continue to break down barriers on Capitol Hill so we can continue to grow stronger. We are very proud that one of our first victories, the establishment of the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund in 1970, is today a cornerstone of the industry’s strength. We look forward to many more achievements that will help credit unions—not-for-profit, member-focused financial cooperatives— continue to succeed and help them better serve Main Street and their more than 106 million members.”

NAFCU got its start in 1967 when a small group of California credit union leaders gathered at the Cockatoo Inn in Los Angeles to talk about starting a new credit union organization.
