WASHINGTON–It may have faded from the spotlight given the seemingly perpetual issues in Congress over funding the federal government, but another very large spending bill that is of keen interest to credit unions is again moving to the forefront of Congress—the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
That legislation, which authorizes $844.3 billion for the Department of Defense (DoD) and $32.4 billion for national security programs within the Department of Energy (DoE), is an annual concern for credit unions for numerous reasons, including provisions around banks’ access to military bases and whether it might be used as a vehicle to carry other legislation or language opposed by credit unions.
NAFCU VP-Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler reminded a conference committee is now meeting to hammer out differences in the versions of the NDAA passed by the House and Senate, respectively.
“We'll be watching what happens with the NDAA as related to a number of issues that can impact credit unions,” said Thaler. “This NDAA can become a vehicle, especially without a government funding measure, to move other items before the end of the calendar year.”
