873-Page Document Of Member Info Mistakenly E-Mailed Out

CORNWALL, U.K.–Kernow Credit Union here inadvertently sent 69 people an 873-page document containing personal financial information on 700 members of the CU.

The document included members' addresses, names, and financial information. The credit union called it a “clerical error.”

Members are now expressing concerns that the confidential details may get into the hands of a third party, and have described the mistake as "extremely concerning".

"Kernow Credit Union profoundly apologizes to all of our members that were affected by a clerical error on the bulk e-mail system that sent statements to a number of members who should not have received them,” the credit union said in a statement.

Kernow CU reported the data breach to the Information Commissioners Office.

"However members are reassured that no bank account, e-mail addresses, National Insurance details or passwords have been divulged,” the credit union said in its statement. “Also that members credit union accounts are fully secure—their money cannot be accessed by unauthorized persons. Kernow Credit Union will fully investigate what went wrong and to prevent any future issues of this kind. To further aid the inquiry all bulk e-mail distributions will be suspended until further notice.”
