6th Annual United in Sustainability Summit Set to be Held; Co-Hosted by United Nations FCU

WASHINGTON–United Nations FCU and OAS FCU will co-host the 6th Annual United in Sustainability Summit on Nov. 30 in Washington at the historic Organization of American States Building.

“Credit unions, because of their community focus, are in a unique position to make a difference and build more climate resilient, economically-empowered and inclusive communities,” the organizations said.

Among the discussion items on the agenda:

  • Sessions on making sustainability a strategic priority
  • Clean energy transition opportunities
  • DEIB: fad or here to stay
  • Achieving bottom line growth and having positive community/social impact.

Session on ‘Positive Action’

The meeting will also include a session titled, “Credit Unions Taking Positive Action for Migrant Communities,” with an introduction from Jon Hoisaeter, deputy representative, with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and panelists Natasha Rivers, senior program manager of sustainability & measurement at BECU in Washington State; Shaida Samimi, financial wellness partner at Patelco FCU in California; and Mahnaz Akbari, project manager with the Afghan Allies Program with PenFed in Virginia. The session will be moderated by Jennifer Esperanza of Coopera Consulting in Iowa.

The organizations noted that more than 100 credit unions actively participate in the United in Sustainability (UIS) Network, which was founded by UNFCU to provide credit unions with tools and resources to start or advance their sustainability journeys.

“These aims align with the Sustainable Development Goals, which seek to build a better world,” the co-sponsors said.
