OAKWOOD, Ga.–Three women, including one former credit union employee, have been charged in a criminal indictment for fraud against a credit union here.
The fraud allegedly occurred at Lanier FCU here, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Carolyn Burrier, Judy Barfield and Teresa Lynn Bruce were charged in the indictment with multiple counts of identity fraud.
Barfield, 67, previously worked at the credit union.
According to the indictment, Burrier was charged with felony theft by taking of $85,000 of Lanier Federal Credit Union’s money in June 2010.
Burrier was also charged with 17 counts of identity fraud. Bruce faces nine counts and Barfield was charged with eight counts, the Gainesville Times reported.
“For 67 years, Judy Barfield has been a valued member of this community. She has never been in any trouble, not even a speeding ticket. Concerning these charges, I expect the evidence will show who is actually responsible for the problems at the bank,” defense attorney Graham McKinnon said in a statement to the Gainesville Times.
The $35-million credit union has approximately 5,500 members.
